Subaru BRZ revealed in Tokyo Motor Show - Al Ain Japan

It was only yesterday when Al Ain Japan heard from Nissan's executive vice president Andy Palmer the Subaru BRZ is a "midlife crisis" designed for a "50-year-old", but Subaru says this particular BRZ Premium Sport Edition is actually for "playful adults", whatever that means. Anyway, it's actually a production special edition derived from the BRZ Premium Sport Package shown at the beginning of this year in Tokyo.

Scheduled to go on sale exclusively in Japan at the end of the year, the Subaru BRZ Premium Sport Edition will have a starting price of 3,034,500 yen (approximately 31,000 USD / 22,600 EUR / 19,300 GBP).

Al Ain Japan expected, the technical aspects of the Subaru BRZ mimic its Toyota brother. The same horizontally opposed 2.0 liter naturally aspirated boxer engine lies beneath the hood putting out 200 PS (147 kW / 197 hp) with a maximum torque of 205 Nm (151 lb-ft).

Still no word on performance figures, but Subaru has revealed the kerb weight is 1219kg (2,689 lb).

Al Ain Japan said, On the outside it is distinguished by STI 17-inch black alloy wheels and a black look for the side mirrors. It will be available with a variety of body paint schemes, while the cabin is set to get two-tone leather-wrapped steering wheel and seats. Above the instrument panel it will have black Alcantara with contrast tan stitching also found at the doors' top section and on the sides of the center console.

Other upgrades worth mentioning include the aluminum pedals, STI engine button, silver accents and a carbon fiber trim on the dashboard. Subaru also used tan leather for the doors, and black leather with tan stitching on the gearbox and handbrake levers.

Mazda previews their SEMA lineup

Mazda has announced plans to introduce four concepts at the SEMA Motor Show.

The company declined to release details but the pictures show there will be two Mazda3s and two Mazda6s.

The Mazda3s will feature a unique exterior with custom graphics and an aerodynamic body kit that includes a front splitter and revised side skirts. We can also see high-performance brakes and black alloy wheels.

The Mazda6s have a restrained design and one of them looks virtually stock aside from the two-tone paint job and aftermarket wheels. The other model is a tad sportier as it has a front splitter, revised side skirts and black accents. The car has also been equipped with red brake calipers that contrast with the black alloy wheels.

2014 Nissan Qashqai teased ahead of next week reveal - Japanese Car Dealer

Nissan has released a teaser photo for the second-gen Qashqai which will be revealed in full on November 7.

The Japanese Car Dealer says their new model has been “reinvented from the ground up” and will “redefine the crossover sector and set new standards”. From what we know so far, there won’t be a “+2” version since they’ve already attributed this task to the 2014 X-Trail which will be offered with an optional seven-seat arrangement.

Engine lineup will comprise at least a brand new turbocharged 1.2-liter gasoline DiG-T engine rated at 113 bhp (84 kW) and a 1.5-liter dCi producing 108 bhp (80 kW). There will also be a larger 1.6-liter dCi with an output of 128 bhp (95 kW).

The second generation of the Nissan Qashqai will ride on the Common Module Family architecture co-developed with Renault and is likely to receive hybrid and/or electric derivatives during its lifespan.

Vettel clinches his 4th title at Buddh International Circuit

Its celebration time for Red Bull Racing as triple World Champion - Sebastien Vettel clinched his third consecutive win at the Airtel Indian Grand Prix in New Delhi and thus became "World Champion" for the 2013 season, 4th time in a row. This podium finish also translates to the fact that the Constructors trophy now belongs to Red Bull Racing this season which once again is a 4th consecutive one in a row. Sebastian Vettel is the youngest four-time World Champion in Formula 1.

 

On winning the race, the German got so ecstatic that he executed a couple of donuts in front of a packed grand stand which invited a fine of 25,000 Euro's to the Red Bull Racing Team. FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) came down heavy on team as well as their lead Driver on the pretext that this move was a violation of rules.

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg came in second followed by Lotus's Romain Grosjean in third. However, the mentioned 2nd and 3rd finish were only possible after an unfortunate retirement of Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) due to an alternator failure on lap 39th out of the 60 lap race. Seeing this failure, Team Red Bull Racing advised triple time World Champion (Vettel) to refrain from using his drinks bottle and also not to engage KERS as it was going to be hard on the car.

Ferrari's blue eyed boy, Fernando Alonso could only manage an 11th place finish as he picked up front wing damage due to a collision between Kimi Raikkonen and Mark Webber which forced him to return to pits in the second lap itself for a nose change. Felipe Massa stuck it out as he lead the race for brief moment initially before the commissioning of regular pit stops to finish the race in 4th position. McLaren Mercedes' Sergio Perez came in fifth followed by Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen in 6th and 7th places respectively. Force India Mercedes' Paul di Resta managed 8th position while Adrian Sutil who was once running third finished 9th overall. STR - Ferrari's Daniel Ricciardo completed the top ten places for the 2013 Edition of the Indian Grand Prix. Kimi missed out the podium finish due to tyre degradation, which meant Grosjean and Massa overtook him in the closing stages of the race.

2014 Honda Civic Coupe World Debut at the 2013 SEMA Show

Honda, the Japanese automaker will present the refurbished Civic at the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show. The mid-cycle refresh for Civic includes sharpened coupe exterior styling and Si performance enhancements designed to make the best-selling compact car even better.

 

The company will also update the Civic lineup with the new enhancements in 2014, to offer more improved sedan to its customers. Details and technical changes will be announced in the coming weeks, but the world get its first look at some of the changes when the 2014 Honda Civic Coupe makes its world debut at the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas on November 5th.

Along with the Civic sedan, the Honda will also present an impressive array of personalized automobiles, motorcycles and the 133-mph "Mean Mower" developed by Honda (UK) and their title-winning British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) partner, Team Dynamics.

Daihatsu Copen to be resurrected - report

A recent report says Daihatsu plans on bringing back to life the Copen in the near future.

A couple of days ago we saw Honda’s S660 concept which serves as a preview for a modern Beat due in Japan in 2015. Now, British media is reporting Daihatsu plans to resurrect the Copen and thus recreate the Beat vs. Copen comparisons even though the production years of the two models never collided. Daihatsu did show a D-R Concept at last year’s Indonesian Motor Show which could indicate the production model’s styling approach.

While the original model was a kei car, it is not known whether its modern successor will fit this category which requires (as of October 1, 1998) vehicles be up to 3.4 meters long and 1.48 meters wide, while the engine must have a 660cc capacity and a maximum output of 64 HP (47 kW).

There are some rumors suggesting the Honda Beat will be sold outside Japan with a larger engine, leading us to believe Daihatsu could sell the model in other markets as well, such as United States where it could be badged as a Scion since Toyota has a majority stake in Daihatsu.

Toyota GT 86 sedan approved for production - report

According to a recent report, Toyota has approved production of a GT 86 sedan.

Citing an "inside source," Al Ain Japan is reporting the model will ride on the same platform as the GT 86 but feature a wheelbase that has been stretched by 100mm (3.9 inches). The car coud also have a revised grille that resembles a samurai sword.

 

The familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will carryover and produce 200 bhp (149 kW) and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) of torque. There could also be a Hybrid R variant that produces 250-270 bhp (186-201 kW) and is 10-15 percent more fuel efficient than the standard model. Little is known about the rumored hybrid, but the source said it could use a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and an electric motor to temporarily deliver an extra burst of power to the rear wheels.

Honda N-WGN & N-WGN Custom announced for Tokyo

Honda has announced plans to introduce the N-WGN and N-WGN Custom at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The company didn't have much to say about the models but they are high-height hatchbacks that promise to be safe and comfortable.

 

The standard model has a boxy design that incorporates an upright front fascia, flared wheel arches and a distinctive greenhouse. The Custom, on the other hand, has an aerodynamic body kit with modified bumpers, revised side skirts and a tailgate-mounted spoiler. The model also gains a revised grille and bespoke headlights.

The cabin is relatively sparse but features a three-spoke steering wheel, silver accents and a simplistic instrument cluster. The Custom goes one step further with metallic trim, piano black accents and upgraded instrumentation.

The N-WGN will be unveiled on November 20th, so stay tuned for full details.

Honda Announces vehicles to be shown at 2013 Tokyo Motor Show

Japanese auto major Honda Motor co has now announced its line-up of production and concept models, which are to be unveiled at the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show 2013, starting from 20th November.

Honda S60 Concept, an open-top sports-type mini vehicle, the world debut of the Urban SUV Concept’s production model and Japan premier of the NSX Concept are among the biggest highlights of the line-up to be unveiled at the event.

The Japanese auto major will also showcase the all new UNI-CUB, a personal mobility device, which has been developed under the theme of ‘harmony with people’. The fourth model of the N Series of mini-vehicles, the N-WGN will also make its world premier at the show. The all new Accord Plug-in Hybrid, Fit with Earth Dream technology are among the mass-production models to be showcased there.

Subaru XV Black limited edition brings rugged looks for 24,495 GBP

Subaru is introducing a more rugged-looking XV Black limited edition in UK priced from 24,495 GBP.

The Subaru XV Black is wearing an exclusive Crystal Black Silica paint and comes with a more rugged appearance thanks to the front, rear and side silver-resin under guards, as well as front and rear mud flaps. It also boasts a cargo step panel and a foldable cargo tray, while the cabin is fitted with heavy-duty rubber floor mats.

 

 

Customers will be able to select from either a 2.0-liter Boxer diesel engine connected to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 2.0-liter Boxer gasoline engine mated to a Lineartronic automatic transmission. The gasoline-powered model is available from 24,495 GBP while the diesel can be had at 24,995 GBP. Both of them are based on the SE model and cost an extra 1,000+ GBP but provide additional goodies worth 1,600 GBP so the customer saves at least 600 GBP.

Standard equipment of the Subaru XV Black includes 17-inch alloys, Vehicle Dynamics Control system, cruise control, folding mirrors, daytime running lights and heated front seats. The compact crossover also benefits from dual-zone air conditioning, rear privacy glass, HID headlamps, a rearview safety camera and Bluetooth connectivity.

Mazda3 SKYACTIV-CNG concept heading to Tokyo Motor Show

Mazda has announced plans to show a CNG version of the all-new Mazda3 next month at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Approximately two weeks ago Mazda revealed a hybrid version of the Axela/Mazda3 Hybrid and now they are previewing a CNG concept Mazda3 which will be showcased towards the end of November at the Tokyo Motor Show. The concept will feature a dual fuel system so it will be able to run not only on gasoline but also on compressed natural gas.

Mazda says only minor modifications were necessary for the conversion since the firm's SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine already has a high compression ratio which is necessary since CNG engines burn fuel at a higher pressure. The Japanese marque mentions CO2 emissions should drop by 20 percent compared to the regular gasoline-powered Mazda3 which can be had in hatchback and sedan body styles.

Mazda hasn't said a word about putting the CNG version on sale sometime in the future but it's likely to happen since the company acknowledges demand for CNG-powered cars has risen over recent years.

Nismo to lead the development of the next-generation Nissan GT-R

All eyes are on the 2014 Nissan GT-R Nismo but new details are starting to emerge about the next-generation model.

According to Japanese Car Dealers, the redesigned model will be developed by Nismo instead of Nissan. Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer declined to confirm the news but hinted “As we come to the next generation of GT-R – because that will be a brand-new vehicle – you will probably see a lead coming from Nismo and a follow coming from the passenger car company, rather than the other way round." The executive went on to say the GT-R is a halo product for Nismo so it makes sense that they would lead the development of the new model.

The switch gives Nismo a lot of responsibility but it should pay dividends early on as the next-generation GT-R Nismo GT3 can be developed alongside the standard model. As Palmer explained, “You build that racing credibility from the very beginning."

The 2016 Nissan GT-R still remains shrouded in mystery but previous reports have indicated it could debut "well before the end of 2015" and have cylinder deactivation technology, an engine start/stop system and a Williams-sourced hybrid system.

Le Mans team Jota unveils Mazda MX-5 GT

Jota has officially unveiled their Mazda MX-5 GT. Following a year of development and testing Mazda handed over the project in its entirety to the Le Mans specialist race team.

Drawing inspiration from the concept that debuted at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the MX-5 GT is based on the MX-5 Roadster Coupe Sport Tech and features an upgraded 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 203 bhp (151 kW). This enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h).

The car has also been equipped with a brilliant black roof, a carbon fiber rear diffuser and anthracite alloy wheels.  There's also Bilstein dampers and leather Recaro seats. Options include a carbon fiber front splitter, a carbon fiber rear spoiler and an Öhlins suspension.

The MX-5 GT is hand-finished to order at Jota and available for sale exclusively from Lodge Garage Mazda in Aylesbury, UK. Pricing starts at £29,995 ($48,430 / €35,430).

According to a recent report, Nissan will unveil a Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ competitor at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Al Ain Japan says the model will be a production-like concept that borrows styling cues from the company's past. That's a little vague but Nissan has reportedly confirmed it won't be a "Z" car.
The concept was reportedly designed to gauge customer reaction to an entry-level sports car. If the results are favorable, the model could go into production with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 197 bhp (147 kW).

The model is expected to be shown alongside another concept which is simply being described as "crazy."

A little turbo engine in a small, rear-wheel drive sports car? Sure. That would be great. If you like it, you know, react well to it so Nissan builds it.

The Nissan GT-R gets to 60 in 2.7 seconds. That's fast. Nissan doesn't think that's fast enough. 

There were fewer details on the "crazy" sports car. This is purely a guess on my part, but maybe it will be some kind of new GT-R? We've heard that the Nismo GT-R, which can supposedly hit zero to 60 mph in a stunning two seconds, is also coming to the Tokyo show next month.

Either way, Nissan should have some excitement in store for enthusiasts when the Tokyo show rolls around. Always a good thing

Nissan's Golf rival to get Nismo version, GT-R Nismo due next month with Williams F1 aero tech - photos

Nissan’s vice-president of sales and marketing Guillaume Cartier confirmed the upcoming Golf-rivaling hatchback will receive a hot Nismo variant and that the GT-R Nismo will be shown next month at Tokyo Motor Show sporting Williams F1-developed aerodynamics.

Due sometime next year, the C-segment hatchback from Nissan promises to take on the highly popular Volkswagen Golf VII “from BlueMotion to GTI” and it will do that at a competitive price tag.

Nissan’s response to the frugal BlueMotion Golf will be a diesel-powered model which promises to match the rival’s 88.3 mpg UK (73.5 mpg US or 3.2 liters / 100 km) and 85 g/km CO2 emissions. More importantly, at the other end of the spectrum we shall see a Nismo-prepared version of the new Nissan hatchback.

Nissan will show the GT-R Nismo at next month's Tokyo Motor Show and its aerodynamics were co-developed with the Williams F1 team. As a result of the changes, the more powerful and lighter GT-R will be able to lap the Nürburgring (Germany) faster than the current 7 minutes and 26 seconds. The GT-R will be exhibited alongside two concepts, a radical one which won’t spawn a production model and a retro-inspired vehicle that could reach showrooms in the future.

Nissan’s other plans for 2014 include the unveiling of the second-gen Qashqai at the beginning of the year, along with the market launch of the X-Trail which will replace not only the outgoing model but also the Qashqai+2 as the 2014 X-Trail will be available with an optional seven-seat layout.

2014 Suzuki Alto spied for the first time

Nissan has decided to discontinue the Pixo in order to better concentrate on its other small models.

A Nissan spokesman told  the Japanese marque has decided to stop taking orders for the Pixo and after the remaining ones will be fulfilled the car is going to be axed indefinitely. Although Nissan describes the Pixo as a "good competitor for cars in that class", they want to focus on their more important small cars such as the Micra, Note and Juke.

The Nissan Pixo uses just about the same underpinnings as the Suzuki Alto, but the latter will live on and production will continue at the same Indian factory where the Pixo was made. Moreover, we already showed you spy photos of the new-generation Alto which is programmed for a 2015 market release

The new generation of the 2014 Suzuki Alto/Pixo has been captured on camera for the first time.

The current model was launched in 2008 so time has come for a replacement which will be based on the latest WagonR that came out in Japan last year. The car is expected to grow in size compared to the outgoing model and should gain additional equipment inside the cabin. The elongated wheelbase will provide more legroom for rear passengers, while the taller body should provide a more airy interior.

Depending on market, the Suzuki Alto is also sold as the Celerio, Nissan Pixo and as a Maruti Suzuki A-Star. These prototypes were seen testing somewhere in the south European mountains and in some of the photos we take a look at the rather modest 90s-like interior cabin.

Details about engine lineup are scarce at the moment, but some reports are indicating the new model will be offered with a two-cylinder, 800cc turbo-diesel engine which will power other frugal Suzuki and Maruti small cars.

Nissan will introduce Infiniti in Japan

Nissan has announced plans to introduce Infiniti at home in Japan as a move to meet an increasing demand for premium cars.

 

Japanese car Dealer Al Ain Japan reports Nissan has taken this decision to provide a more worthy adversary to the German automakers. The introduction will occur as early as this winter with the launch of the Skyline (rebadged Q50) which will be manufactured at a factory in Tochigi Prefecture.

Nissan hasn't established a price tag and sales target for the model, but we do know it will be sold at existing Nissan dealerships as there aren't any plans at this moment to open Infiniti showrooms in Japan. With this move Nissan hopes to increase Infiniti's operating profit margin to seven percent in the business year ending in March 2014, compared to less than one percent in the last two years.

2014 Toyota Harrier returns in new official pics

Toyota has released additional photos of the 2014 Harrier which is essentially a Lexus RX with a modified body.

Set to be sold exclusively in Japan, the 2014 Harrier adopts a significantly modified front fascia compared to the RX, packing a pair of appealing darkened headlamps, an Avalon-like large air intake as well as what appears to be a glossy transparent plastic grille. At the back there are stylish slender taillights and a roof-mounted spoiler.

Official details about what powers the Harrier are not known at this moment but we will find out in the near future as the car will allegedly reach dealerships this winter. Since the attached photos show the "Hybrid Synergy Drive" badging, Toyota plans on offering the Harrier at least in an eco-friendly variant which could include V6 3.5-liter engine from the RX 450h working with two electric motors and a Ni-MH battery to provide a combined output of 295 bhp (220 kW). The Lexus version needs 7.8 seconds to complete the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run and will do a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h).

2014 Mazda Axela / Mazda3 Hybrid revealed

Mazda has released some new details about the Axela / Mazda3 Hybrid.

Set to go on sale in Japan on November 21st, the Axela Hybrid will feature a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a continuously variable transmission. This setup will enable the model to return up to 30.8 km/L (3.2 L/100km / 72.4 mpg US / 87.0 mpg UK) in the JC08 cycle.

Mazda declined to release detailed specifications but the pictures suggest the car will have a revised instrument cluster and a new shifter. The trunk also appears to be significantly smaller than the standard model so prepare to pack lightly.

The Axela Hybrid will be available exclusively as a sedan and pricing starts at ¥2,373,000 (including taxes).

Honda, the Japanese automaker has announced that the all-new Fit aka Jazz has received a whopping 62,000 orders within just a month of its launch. Moreover, it is also speculated that the company is also developing a Jazz/Fit Type R. The new Fit model was launched in Japan on September 5th and the demand of the vehicle is now four times more than the usual 15,000 units per month. 

The vehicle is yet to reach European and US dealerships. The company delivered 19,388 units of new Fit to customers last month, making it the third best-selling car, following the Toyota Aqua and Prius C. Interestingly, around 70 per cent of sales are coming from the new hybrid model, which offers an extra-ordinary and class-leading fuel economy of 36.04km/l. It comes powered by a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine working together with a high output electric motor and lithium-ion battery. The engine is mated to a seven speed twin-clutch gearbox.



Talking about the new Jazz/Fit Type R, it will be based on the Jazz RS and powered by a hybridized 1.5-litre engine that develops 190bhp. The engine will be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and it is likely to offer an excellent fuel economy of around 27-28kmpl. We also expect it to house a sport-tuned suspension and an aggressive body kit.

A Japanese video has surfaced that shows what appears to be a prototype for the 2015 Subaru WRX. The video was made earlier this year and was primarily created to showcase Subaru's new EyeSight driving assistance technology.

 

 

We first saw the model at the New York Auto Show in March when Subaru unveiled the stunning WRX Concept. In the months that followed, numerous prototypes have been spotted and close comparison leads us to believe the model above is a virtually undisguised prototype we are pining to see.

A research undertaken by Warranty Direct ·an insurance expert and by What Car? ·the motoring magazine ·indicates that Japanese cars are the most reliable in the used car category. A reliability survey also showed that the top seven places in ten were taken by Japan car manufacturers while European used cars are from among the ten least reliable



Japanese car manufacturers Honda ·leading for the fifth year, followed by Subaru, Mitsubishi, Lexus and Toyota ·in that order ·took the top credits in polls conducted on performing old cars aged between three and ten years . Very few of these cars required repairs in a one year period of use, with Honda leading with the least at just seven per cent cars needing repairs.



The other Japanese used cars leading the lot were Mazda and Nissan. Germany-made Skoda and Britain-made MINI were the only cars from the west that passed the survey of reliable used cars, with Skoda in the eighth and MINI in the tenth position. Among the least reliable cars Land Rover of Britain led at 53% failure rate with other European cars Renault Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Vauxhall, MG, Saab, BMW, Rover and the Audi proving to be prone to more break downs. What Car? stated that break down charges on a Renault are lower as compared to Mazda and Porsche. These surveys are a boon to car manufacturers, which keep striving to improve the mechanics of their newer models to making them more reliable and in another couple of years of more, the hard facts on these poorly performing vehicles are likely to disappear altogether.



Car manufacturers holding prestigious positions have had to undergo embarrassing rates of failure as compared to manufacturers of cars that have been pegged as not being reliable, as the latter are showing signs of improving on their reliability status. Among Japanese manufactured cars, in spite of the fact that used Honda cars give the least problems, ten percent of their break downs happen with the air conditioning systems.

Toyota GT 86 Convertible

A few months ago, rumors surfaced that Toyota had axed the GT 86 Convertible. Shortly thereafter, GT 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada dismissed the reports and said the model was still under evaluation. Fast forward to today and Al Ain Japan is reporting the model has been "delayed indefinitely." 

Citing company insiders, the magazine says the model is on ice as it isn't in the Toyota product plan for 2014 or 2015. The sources declined to give a reason for the model's status but previous reports have indicated high costs and production capacity issues.

Despite the latest bout of bad news, the magazine speculations the model could eventually be fast-tracked if Toyota's management changes their mind.

Toyota has managed to maintain its position as the world's most valuable automotive brand. They beat off stiff competition from BMW and Mercedes to take the top spot. German brands dominate the top 10 with half of them coming from the European country.

According to the report, Toyota's brand is worth $35.3 billion which also makes it the 10th most valuable of all brands.

In the overall list, Coca-Cola has slipped from top spot down to third after being overtaken by Apple and Google respectively after the tech giants achieved massive brand growth in the past 10 months.

Subaru has announced the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid

Subaru has announced the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid will be priced from $25,995 when it goes on sale in the United States later this year.

Designed to combine fuel-efficiency with go-anywhere capability, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid is distinguished by an active shutter grille, unique alloy wheels, LED taillights and an optional Plasma Green Pearl exterior that is exclusive to the hybrid model. The crossover also has additional sound deadening material, a revised instrument cluster, an improved HVAC system and a 4.3-inch LCD multi-information display that shows the status of the hybrid system.

Power is provided by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that develops 148 bhp (110 kW) and 145 lb-ft (196 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission which has an integrated electric motor that produces 13 bhp (9 kW) and 48 lb-ft (65 Nm) of torque. This setup enables the model to return an estimated 28 mpg city / 34 mpg highway / 31 mpg combined (US).

Despite the addition of the hybrid technology, the model still retains the XV's off-road capability thanks to 8.7-inches (221mm) of ground clearance and a Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. The model has also been equipped with "special chassis tuning" for more agile handling.

Tokyo Motor Show

Mitsubishi has announced plans to introduce the eK Space and eK Space Custom at the Tokyo Motor Show next month.

Described as a "super height wagon," the eK Space is the company's second kei car to be jointly-developed with Nissan.

The company declined to release specifications but said the model builds on the success of the eK Wagon by providing "an increase in cabin volume with an interior height that rivals the leaders in its class." As a result, the model has a box-like appearance that favors function over form. However, the car comes nicely equipped with tinted rear windows and an electric sliding rear door.

The four-seat cabin is relatively sparse but features metallic accents, a rear air "circulator" and a "touch panel" climate control system. Higher-end variants can also be equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system that has GPS navigation.

There's no word on what powers the model but we wouldn't be surprised if it uses the same three-cylinder engines as the eK Wagon and eK Custom. If this is correct, we can expect the model will have outputs of 49 HP (36 kW) and 64 HP (47 kW).

The eK Space and eK Space Custom will go on sale in Japan early next year and pricing will be announced closer to launch.
